What Is Express Entry?
Express Entry is Canada’s online system for managing applications to three major immigration programs:
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC) – for skilled workers with eligible Canadian work experience.
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) – for skilled workers with eligible foreign or Canadian work experience.
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) – for qualified skilled trades workers.
Key Eligibility Differences
Language Skills
- CEC: CLB 7 for TEER 0/1 jobs; CLB 5 for TEER 2/3 jobs.
- FSWP: CLB 7 minimum.
- FSTP: CLB 5 (speaking/listening), CLB 4 (reading/writing).
Work Experience
- CEC: 1 year in Canada (last 3 years).
- FSWP: 1 year continuous (last 10 years).
- FSTP: 2 years in a skilled trade (last 5 years).
Education
- CEC: Not required.
- FSWP: Secondary education required; more points for post‑secondary.
- FSTP: Not required.
Job Offer
- CEC: Not required.
- FSWP: Not required (but adds points).
- FSTP: Required (valid job offer for 1 year or certificate of qualification).
Entering the Pool: It’s a Competition
Creating an Express Entry profile doesn’t mean you’ve applied for permanent residence. It means you’ve entered the pool of candidates, where you’ll be ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
Canada invites the highest‑ranking candidates in each round. Sometimes, invitations are category‑based, targeting specific groups such as:
- French‑language proficiency
- Healthcare occupations
- STEM occupations
- Trades
- Education occupations
- Transport occupations
Receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
If you’re invited, you have 60 days to submit your permanent residence application. You’ll need to:
- Fill out the online form.
- Upload documents (police certificates, proof of funds, birth/marriage certificates, etc.).
- Complete a medical exam with an approved panel physician.
- Pay fees (processing, biometrics, right of permanent residence).
After You Apply
IRCC will review your application, request biometrics, and may ask for interviews or additional documents. If approved, you’ll receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and, if required, a permanent resident visa.
⚠️ Important: COPRs cannot be extended. You must travel to Canada before it expires.
What If You’re Not Invited?
Your profile stays in the pool for 12 months. If it expires, you can create a new one. You can also decline an invitation and remain in the pool for future rounds.
